Communicating with your Instructor

In order to perform your best in your college classes, it is crucial to actively communicate with your Instructors. Communication can help you feel more comfortable in college and more connected to the class. It will help you succeed not only when you are in college but will also help develop skills for after graduation.  Here are some tips to help you communicate with your professors.

  1. Use office hours
    • When the semester begins, make note of when your Instructor's office hours are. These are usually listed in the syllabus and if you can't find it make sure you ask when the office hours are. Email your Instructor ahead of time to confirm they will be there and summarize what you need help with so they can plan ahead for your visit.
  2. Don't be afraid to ask questions
    • If no one asks questions or takes advantage of office hours your instructors will assume you understand the class. They are experts in the classes they teach and will gladly expand on any information you may be struggling with.
  3. Be Prepared
    • Plan ahead what questions you want to ask when you speak with your professors. Make sure you bring any notes, readings, or assignments you have regarding your questions.
